About ELI

Created in 2002 by the Alliance for Children and Families through the generous support of Baltimore’s Board of Child Care, the Executive Leadership Institute (formerly the Executive Management Institute) is a nonprofit management certificate program for emerging leaders in the nonprofit human services sector.

Since 2005 the University of Michigan School of Social Work and Ross School of Business have cosponsored the Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) with the Alliance for Children and Families, a national membership organization for family and children’s agencies throughout the United States. Participants of ELI benefit by interacting with the executives, gaining a leadership view, and having the opportunity for placements and jobs.

This two-week certificate program is geared toward senior leaders of nonprofit human service organizations who are aspiring for excellence. Likewise, a part of the mission of the University of Michigan School of Social Work is collaborating with partners like the Alliance in advancing the best practices in leadership.

Conducted on-campus at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the School of Social Work and Ross School of Business provide faculty to give presentations, as well as a committee of faculty and staff to advise on the curriculum, which focuses on executive and leadership skills.

Institute Goal

The goal of ELI is to increase participants’ knowledge and skills in key executive leadership and management responsibilities, including the ability to:

  • Identify and describe various leadership styles and skills required for senior executive positions.
  • Assess and orchestrate the context, conditions, and competencies of leaders that affect organizational performance.
  • Understand the impact of cultural uniqueness both in the workforce and among the client base, and know how to maximize multicultural differences in leading the organization.
  • Evaluate and improve organizational effectiveness in meeting client needs.
  • Understand and address typical ethical concerns of human services executives.
  • Effectively recruit and retain a qualified workforce.
  • Prepare a professional personal development plan (career path.)

Institute Vision

To expand and strengthen the pool of senior-level managers and executives positioned and equipped to lead the nonprofits of today, tomorrow, and beyond.
